IE9, standards, and why Acid3 isn’t the priority
Microsoft's development direction of Internet Explorer 9 is unambiguous: implementing HTML5 Web standards is the name of the game, with the intent of letting developers use the "same markup" to work everywhere. As IE General Manager Dean Hachamovitch said at MIX10 this week, "We love HTML5 so much we actually want it to work." Redmond is targeting real-world applications based on real-world data. For example, every single JavaScript and DOM API used by the top 7,000 websites was recorded. IE9 will deliver support for every API used by those sites

The Windows Web Browser Choice Screen Works [Web]
According to the latest data from Opera, the Windows Web Browser Choice Screen —a browser download and activation pop-up mandated by the European Union in all versions of Windows—is working. There has been a "dramatic uptake on downloads." More

Amazon threatens more publishers with freeze-out over prices
Earlier this year, Amazon found itself in a showdown over e-book pricing with publisher Macmillan, which wanted the ability to set pricing for its works. Amazon initially pulled all of Macmillan's titles off its virtual shelves but, a few days later, conceded there was little it could do —Macmillan's works went back on sale, and Amazon apparently gave up on trying to force its prices on the company. Despite that rousing lack of success, reports are now indicating that several other publishers may get the same treatment, as Amazon is threatening to stop selling their works as well. Indications of an ongoing fight between Amazon and book publishers were apparent almost as soon as the Macmillan matter was settled . Amazon had been purchasing e-books from publishers at a wholesale rate, which allowed it to set the retail prices; rumor had it that the company was selling works at a loss in order to push Kindle sales

Many URL Shorteners Are Slow and Unreliable
Dutch web monitoring company WatchMouse has done a thorough analysis of uptime and performance of 14 major URL shortening services, with quite disheartening results . As it turns out, only two of these ( goo.gl and twt.tl ) have had a perfect uptime record between 02/14/2010 and 03/16/2010; the rest of the pack mostly had minor uptime issues, while snurl.com and tr.im had uptime below 99%. When it comes to performance, measured in the same time period, most URL shorteners can only be characterized as slow. Most of them add more than half a second to the time it takes to open a link; Facebook ’s fb.me has been by far the slowest, while only Google’s goo.gl and youtu.be can really be called fast, both averaging around 350 miliseconds. Given the popularity of URL shorteners on social networks such as Twitter , this is a big deal.

It’s Time to Get Video on Wikipedia
Wikipedia is one of the most amazing knowledge resources on the Internet, featuring millions of articles and images, but it sorely lacks a certain (very important) type of content – video. For this reason the Open Video Alliance is launching a mass campaign to bring video to Wikipedia. The central site for the project is Let’s Get Video on Wikipedia , featuring a tutorial on how to post videos to Wikipedia as well as a gallery of some of the recently posted videos. There’s also good news for those who were struggling to convert videos to Theora, which is the open video format used by Wikipedia.

Still Using Firefox 3.0.x? Time to Move On
After many months of testing, five beta versions and two release candidates, Firefox 3.0 was released in June 2008 . The 3.0.x branch was the major stable branch of Mozilla’s web browser for a long time, and it’s been updated to version 3.0.18 so far. Now, however, it reached the end of the line, as Mozilla’s development plans include only one more update for it. The users who have moved on to the current stable branch, 3.6 , are probably wondering what we’re talking about, but many users still use the 3.0.x version; with this move Mozilla is indicating that it wants these users to upgrade, too. Mozilla has recently been more aggressive about upgrades , reminding users of old versions of Firefox that an upgrade is available.

The Making Of Heineken’s Amazing Soccer Swindle [VIDEO]
If you’re a soccer fan, you’ll understand. If you’re not, well, suffice it to say that Europeans (Italians, especially) are (in general) crazy about soccer. So when Heineken staged a fake classical music concert at the same time as a crucial Real Madrid vs. AC Milan game on October 21, there was no chance that any real soccer fan would be there…except if their girlfriends, professors and bosses convinced them (by any means necessary) to attend.

Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10 Shed Beta Tag
If you’re a user of Opera Mini, chances are you’ve already switched from Opera Mini 4.2 to Opera Mini 5 , beta tag be damned. The new version brought many improvements (tabs and speed dial probably being the most important) that made its predecessor look pale in comparison. Same goes for Opera Mobile 10 , and since both these browsers have been available as betas for several months now, it’s no surprise that Opera decided to promote them to stable versions . Compared to the betas, Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10 don’t bring new features, only minor bug fixes. You can download them both here .
