Google Voice Leaves Beta, Now Open to Everyone [News]
Until today, Google Voice was a neat service you needed to be invited into. Now Google's thrown open the doors, letting in anyone (in the U.S.) wanting One Number to Rule Them All—or just web-based voicemail on your current number. More

Make Free VoIP Calls from Google Voice [How To]
Google Voice is great, but it isn't an entirely free voice-over-internet service if you have to pay a phone bill to use it. With a few tweaks, though, you can make completely free internet phone calls with Google Voice. Here's how.

Verizon Offers Contract-Free Option for FiOS
One of the most infuriating parts of buying broadband Internet service is getting stuck in a 2-year contract even if you’ve never tried the service out before. Today, Verizon moved to eliminate that issue for its FiOS service by introducing a contract-free plan. Like other broadband providers, Verizon incentivizes new customers to sign up by offering reduced prices for the first several months of service. Normally those “savings” only come with a contract, but Verizon now offers the discounted rates on its TV/phone/Internet bundles for a full year without any contract, equipment included

Google to Integrate Google Voice with Gmail [RUMOR]
Google is testing a new feature in Gmail, in which a phone icon opens a special Gmail chat window consisting of a dialpad, contact search, credit balance and a call button. The feature is not yet publicly available. A couple of weeks ago we asked whether Google was building a Skype competitor after Google acquired VoIP company Global IP Solutions (GIPS).

Gmail May Offer Free VoIP Calling with Google Voice [Gmail]
Google's been really quiet with its future plans for its Google Voice service, which remains invite-only at the moment, but it looks like full internet telephone calling through Gmail is in the cards. The super-dedicated Google Operating System blog gets an anonymous tip and screenshot showing a Gmail chat window with all the tools you'd need to call over Google Voice included: dialpad, contact picker, credit tally, and call button. The TechCrunch and Download Squad blogs had Google sources telling them in April that a Google Voice desktop client was under internal testing, so it's not too far-fetched to believe Google would also slide voice calling into Gmail. At the moment, Google Voice can still make free VoIP calls with Gizmo5 , but accounts for that Google-purchased service have been suspended.

Gmail Makes it Easier to Push Your Friends onto Video Chat [Gmail]
The Gmail team admits in a blog post that options for video, voice, and group chat were "curiously tucked away" in the lower-left corner, so they've taken steps to fix it. A new chat interface, pictured here, makes a video or voice chat much easier to activate, and if a friend lacks the proper plug-in for video chat, you can simply press a button to push a download link to them to get them up and running. And if you were looking around, they've also moved the "Off the Record" and other helpful features to the new "Actions" menu. [ Official Gmail Blog ] More
