LeBron James is Twitter’s Latest Sponsored Trending Topic

The NBA appears to be the latest big brand trying out Twitter’s new “ promoted trends ” feature that lets a company bump a given topic onto Twitter’s trending topic list. The league has promoted the term “LeBron James,” meaning when users click on the basketball superstar’s name (which is accompanied by a “promoted” icon), they’ll see both tweets about him from regular Twitter users and a promoted tweet from the NBA. The promoted tweet directs users to a special section of NBA.com that has been setup to cover free agency. For those that have been following the NBA offseason, you’ll recognize how timely a move that is by the organization.

Disney/Pixar Buys The First Twitter Trending Topic Ad

Since April, Twitter users have grown accustomed to Twitter’s first ad revenue play: Promoted Tweets . Today, the second phase of that strategy is starting to be tested: Promoted Trending Topics. The first such topic? Toy Story 3, promoted by Disney/Pixar. As you can see in the right hand toolbar of Twitter.com, at the bottom of the Trending Topics area there is now an 11th topic, “Toy Story 3.” Next to it is a big yellow box letting you know that it’s a promoted Trending Topic.

Corey Haim Dies: Fans Pay Tribute on Social Media Sites

Corey Haim, best known as one half of “the two Coreys,” was found dead in his home this morning at the age of 38, apparently from an accidental drug overdose. The actor was a teen icon and heartthrob in the late 1980s, known for his roles in films like Lucas, The Lost Boys, License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream. While his more recent work has been more limited, that hasn’t stopped fans from flooding Twitter and Facebook with responses to this news. Haim is most prominently known for his work in the The Lost Boys — a coming-of-age story about teenage vampires.

YouTube Down For Maintenance. Right.

“YouTube is down for maintenance and will be back shortly,” says the site . The site first went down at around 9:30 California time. Or possibly earlier, we’re sorting through the Twitter barrage – “ is down ” is a trending topic right now. Most companies plan maintenance for short periods in the middle of the night, so our guess is this is maintenance of the unplanned sort

Windows 7 Officially Released Today

It’s been an eventful day: among all the breaking news about Microsoft signing a search deal with Facebook and Twitter , Google doing the same with Twitter and later announcing social search , one can easily forget that today is the day that Vista gets replaced by something better: Windows 7. As we wrote earlier, the interest for the new OS from Microsoft has been huge, making Windows 7 the biggest pre-order item in the history of Amazon UK and a perpetual trending topic on Twitter . The reactions from users and reviewers have been mostly positive , but after the lukewarm it’s-ok-but-why-should-switch-from-WinXP attempt that was Vista, the fact that people can’t wait to get their hands on Windows 7 is hardly a surprise. And, for the most part, it’s true. Annoying security features such as UAC have been fixed in Windows 7 (you can now manually set its annoyance level), the system feels speedier and more responsive (although it really isn’t that much faster when you actually measure it (for example, boot time on both systems is pretty much the same on my computer), but it feels that way, and it’s all that matters), compatibility issues have been fixed

The most republished Parliamentary question ever? Trafigura and the Ivory Coast

As The Spectator reports , the Guardian has had an injunction served on it preventing it reporting a written question table in Parliament. This being the internet age, not only is #trafigura a trending topic on Twitter but more substantively the question in answer has been (at the time of writing) republished verbatim  just under 300 times elsewhere on the internet (see these Google search results ). I struggle to think of another Parliamentary question that has got that level of coverag

Mugging the rich bastard lawyers

If the famous media gaggers , the libel law firm Carter-Rick, scourge of Private Eye, thought they’d scored another famous victory (these guys are big on bragging ) suppressing news they hadn’t reckoned with social media. #trafigura is as I type the #1 trending topic on Twitter (that’s in the whole world). The Spectator has already broken the wall between what the blogs will say and what the print media thinks it can get away with … and many, many more people are now aware of the

Twitter Search Refines Trend Searches To Give You More Real-Time Results

So yes, President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this morning, and Twitter (and the rest of the Web) immediately blew up . I don’t think I’ve ever seen something become a trending topic on there ever since reports about the death of Michael Jackson started surfacing (I’m not sure which news item was more surprising). But when I went to Twitter Search to find out what people were saying about the announcement in real-time (cause, you know, that’s what it’s goo
