Android Gets Tough with Rugged Motorola Defy
Motorola’s new Android-based smartphone, the Defy, boasts an interesting combination of solid features and ruggedness that will appeal to users prone to splashing, dropping and scratching their phone. If you saw the Defy and read its specifications, you’d think it’s just another Android smartphone: it sports a 3.7” touchscreen display with a 480 x 854 pixel resolution, an 800 MHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera with a flash, aGPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a microUSB jack. However, the Defy is resistant to dust, scratches and impact, as well as water, making it quite a different beast from most other smartphones of its ilk. Most importantly, the extra protection doesn’t come at the expense of size and weight: the phone’s dimensions are 59 x 107 x 13.4 mm and it weighs 118 grams.

Facebook’s Latest Patent Targets Search Behaviors
Serving up search results based on what your friends clicked: It’s been a hot topic lately, and one that Facebook has seen fit to claim as its own. The social networking goliath has just won a patent covering a certain type of search algorithm, one that is largely based on the interests and clicks of a user’s friends and friends-of-friends. Specifically, the patent is for “ranking search results based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of a social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation.” The patent continues, “Search results, including sponsored links and algorithmic search results, are generated in response to a query and are marked based on frequency of clicks on the search results by members of social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation from the member who submitted the query.

Google Wave Is Not Dead (Yet)
Google’s Wave was a project that garnered a huge amount of interest, only to see the buzz completely die within a year of the launch, even after Wave stopped being invite-only and opened to the public. This prompted Google to shut the service down in August , making some parts of Wave open source. Furthermore, Google promised to create tools that will help users extract their content from Wave.
