Clavilux 2000 Keyboard Makes Music Look As Beautiful As It Sounds [Visualizations]

Learning to play the piano has lingered on my to-do list for a long time. But watching this video of the Clavilux 2000 keyboard generating a spectacular light show in real time, I might have to make it a priority. The Clavilux is a digital keyboard rigged up to a projector, letting the audience see the music they're hearing. And it really is the music they're seeing: each stripe of light corresponds directly to a key that is struck, the individual bands representing the velocity and length of each note played. The notes are assigned colors, as well, giving a visual overview of the harmony of the piece

Simple Scan Makes Linux Scanning Beginner-Friendly [Downloads]

Linux: The default image scanning app on most Linux destkops, XSane, has many, many buttons and sliders. When all you want to do is make a PDF from text, or scan a picture, Simple Scan is there for you. Robert Ancell, a developer for Ubuntu backer Canonical, is developing Simple Scan to drop into the next release of Ubuntu, Lucid Lynx, due out in April. Although his software isn't officially at a finished, 1.0 stage, it's already decent enough to be an attractive install for Ubuntu users. Load up your scanner, plug it into your system, fire up Simple Scan, switch between Photo and Text, and hit the Scan button.

Google Wave Declutters The Inbox With Following Feature

This morning, Google is making a slight update to Wave to help users unclog their inbox from public waves. Previously, you could see public waves in your inbox, which was fairly annoying. Now for a wave to appear in your inbox, you need to “follow” the wave. When someone adds you directly to a wave, or if you contribute to a wave, you will automatically be following that wave

A.W.E. Robotic Wall Automatically Creates The Workspace You Need [Robots]

Think about your workspace and imagine if your furniture or your desk or cubicle could automatically reconfigure for different applications with a simple wave of the hand. Now check out the reality of Clemson's Animated Work Environment (AWE). Essentially, AWE is a programmable wall with varied displays that can switch between six configurations just by activating a proximity sensor. For example, when the wall is hanging overhead like a ceiling, the act of standing up triggers the sensor and instructs the wall to move out of the way

VistaSwitcher Updates, Adds Default Application-Specific Window-Switching Shortcut [Updates]

Previously mentioned Alt+Tab replacement VistaSwitcher is one of the coolest new utilities we've featured in a while, and today it's updated with out-of-the-box support for application-specific Alt+` window switching. To switch between any open Windows, the standard Alt+Tab is still your go-to shortcut. If, however, you want to switch only between individual windows of a single active application, you can now hit Alt+` (the backtick key next to the 1 key on the top of the keyboard). So, for example, if you've got multiple Firefox windows, an Explorer window, and a Word document open, but Firefox is the active app, you can switch only between Firefox windows by hitting Alt+`. This feature is actually lifted from OS X, but it's a really nice shortcut to have in Windows, too

VistaSwitcher is an Absolutely Awesome Alt-Tab Replacement [Screenshot Tour]

Window switching utility VistaSwitcher replaces the boring Alt-Tab built into Windows with an incredibly useful alternative—complete with eye candy and loads of keyboard navigation options. (Click any of the images for a closer look.) It's a little difficult to showcase how well this thing works with just a screenshot, but you can see the partially transparent Alt-Tab switcher window, complete with a massive preview window and the window titles easily readable. Awesome Keyboard Window Manipulation Once you've brought up the Alt-Tab dialog, you can use the "S" key to select more than one window at a time—and then you can use the C, V, or H keys to either Cascade, Tile Vertically, or Tile Horizontally for just the windows that you've selected.
