Google to Power AOL Search for the Next 5 Years

Google and AOL have signed a deal that extends the search and advertising partnership between the two companies for another five years. The agreement also includes mobile search and adds a content sharing partnership with YouTube. In a statement , AOL CEO Tim Armstrong said, “After nearly a decade-long partnership in search, we’re looking forward to expanding our global relationship to mobile search and YouTube.

Facebook’s Latest Patent Targets Search Behaviors

Serving up search results based on what your friends clicked: It’s been a hot topic lately, and one that Facebook has seen fit to claim as its own. The social networking goliath has just won a patent covering a certain type of search algorithm, one that is largely based on the interests and clicks of a user’s friends and friends-of-friends. Specifically, the patent is for “ranking search results based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of a social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation.” The patent continues, “Search results, including sponsored links and algorithmic search results, are generated in response to a query and are marked based on frequency of clicks on the search results by members of social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation from the member who submitted the query.

Bing for Android Has Arrived… for Verizon Only

Bing has made its debut on Android, but you can only download the app if you’re a Verizon customer. The new app doesn’t skimp on bringing the full Bing experience to Android . Not only can users search the web with the Bing app, but they can also browse search results for images, movies, maps, news and directions. The addition of Bing Maps is particularly interesting; it works much like Google Maps , providing you not only directions, but layers such as traffic and satellite views. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with voice navigation.

As per usual, there’s no legal way to stream video of the whole 2010 Emmy Awards ceremony live online, but there are a few ways you can use the web to supplement your TV viewing experience. This year the options include Facebook and Twitter -integrated, live red carpet and backstage video from Ustream as well as live blogs from Team Coco , Entertainment Weekly and others. You can also turn to the crowd for info by following Twitter updates about the ceremony, or checking Justin.tv for live video coverage beyond Ustream’s channel. Court reaffirms: fourth amendment rights not violated if the police install a GPS device on your car when it’s not in your garage

Back in January, a court in Portland, Oregon ruled that the Fourth Amendment rights of one Juan Pineda-Moreno had not been violated by the police when they tracked him using various GPS devices they installed on the underside of his Jeep with magnets. You see, the police suspected that Pineda-Moreno was growing Marijuana somewhere, and they really didn't like that. Eventually, Pineda-Moreno was arrested and convicted of crimes involving the growth of said Marijuana -- but he appealed the decision because he thought that his Fourth Amendment rights (the one which guards against unreasonable search and seizure) had been violated. The appeals court has recently upheld the original decision, but there were five dissenting votes, meaning that the case is anything but cut and dried.

Google Improves Real-time Search

Since its December 2009 launch, Google has been making minor improvements to Google Real-time Search . Today, the offering has been refreshed with three key additions: conversation view, location refinements and Google Alerts for updates. With conversation view, tweets are organized from oldest to newest and are threaded to provide full context around real-time conversations. Conversation view includes replies and retweets.
