Twitter Search Results to Show Popular Tweets On Top
Twitter appears set to tweak search results to return the most popular tweets first — instead of the most recent — for any given search query. This according to Twitter Developer Advocate Taylor Singletary, who has just updated the developer Google Group announcing the yet-to-be-released product. Singletary says, “This is a beta project, but an important first step to surface the most popular tweets for users searching Twitter.” The announcement is geared toward developers to prepare them for changes in the search API. The implication, however, is that the appearance of Twitter Search will also be altered to highlight popular tweets. Ultimately, it appears that the revamped search experience will be available on both Twitter.com and third-party applications and clients that move to support it

Google May Leave China on April 10
Google’s decision to cease its operation in China is edging closer to reality after months of negotiations. China Business News reports that Google plans to leave China on April 10. The report cites an unidentified Google China employee, but this information has not been confirmed by Google. Allegedly, Google gave its China employees the option of moving to the company’s U.S. headquarters or working for its Asia-Pacific operations

What Features Would You Want from a Google TV? [Ask The Readers]
Now that we've read fairly firm proof that Google's looking to get into the set-top TV market, we're wondering what they'll deliver that's new and unique. YouTube, a semi-decent browser, sure—but what else would you want on your biggest screen? More

Google TV is Coming to a Living Room Near You
Not too long ago we got word that Google is working on a TV search project with Dish Network, and now there’s every indication the search giant wants even more direct involvement with the television ecosystem. According to the New York Times , they’re partnering with Sony and Intel in a new Android-based platform literally dubbed Google TV. The new set-top box will allow users to surf online video from the comforts of the couch, and will compete with the likes of the Boxee Box and the Popbox we got our hands on at CES this year, the Roku set-top device, and to some extent video game consoles that have the ability to stream content from Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, and others. Beyond straight up video, the idea is to give users an interface to access popular social sites like Twitter and browse photos on sharing sites like Google-owned Picasa on their TVs as well

Gesture Search Available for Android 1.6 [Updates]
Gesture Search, Google's umpteenth attempt to give you input options other than a tiny virtual keyboard, has made the leap down to Android 1.6 , meaning those with G1s, myTouch 3Gs, Heros, and other non-Droid, non-Nexus phones can give it a go. Having used and challenged Gesture Search since first reviewing it , I'm finding that it's a better option for when you're walking and typing, quickly calling, or otherwise unable to concentrate on a full typing action. Maybe those are also good times to just not have the phone out, sure, but it's a handy alternative for such times.

St. Patricks Day Doodles Take Over Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask [PICS]
We’re used to Google and other search engines decorating their homepages for special occasions, and this St Patrick’s Day is no different with various doodles, graphics and costumes marking the holiday around the web. Google, Bing, Ask and Yahoo are all hyping the craic in honor of the patron saint of Ireland whose Saint’s Day — March 17 — sees parades and celebrations, the wearing of green, the drinking of Guinness and the singing of terrible songs across the globe. Google Google has chosen to go Celtic with a green Irish doodle version on its homepage: Ask Ask has dressed up its Jeeves character with some Irish-themed accessories, sticking with the green theme and adding a shamrock for good luck: Bing Bing offers a photographic snapshot of a knees-up of the Irish variety:

Switched On: Halting Total Customization
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. Throughout the histories of Windows Mobile and Android, many handset developers have talked the talk of supporting these mobile operating systems, dribbling out a couple of handsets per year as they focused on other priorities. But not HTC. The company has created more Windows Mobile and Android handsets than companies many times its size, and in fact developed the very first Android handset
