Mad Lib Competition: The Results Are In…

This time last week, prompted by Luke Wroblewski’s research , I asked you to suggest Mad Lib style sign-up text for your favourite websites. By way of encouragement, I promised to dig around my hotel room and find some kind of prizes; a signed copy of my eBay-auction-winning book , a TechCrunch tshirt, a little bottle of shampoo – stuff like that. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the quality of the prizes on offer, the competition was flooded with entries. Over 30 of them in fact, almost all of which were from people who had actually understood the entry requirements

Simple Scan Makes Linux Scanning Beginner-Friendly [Downloads]

Linux: The default image scanning app on most Linux destkops, XSane, has many, many buttons and sliders. When all you want to do is make a PDF from text, or scan a picture, Simple Scan is there for you. Robert Ancell, a developer for Ubuntu backer Canonical, is developing Simple Scan to drop into the next release of Ubuntu, Lucid Lynx, due out in April. Although his software isn't officially at a finished, 1.0 stage, it's already decent enough to be an attractive install for Ubuntu users. Load up your scanner, plug it into your system, fire up Simple Scan, switch between Photo and Text, and hit the Scan button.

Google Adds Flickr, Picasa Photos to Street View [Google Maps]

Google actually began incorporating geo-tagged photos into Street View last year, but they've now added a new photo-viewing interface for users moving through a Street View tour of well-captured areas. That allows you to peek at places that weren't accessible by Google's camera-topped cars, and also provides more angles on any area you're looking at. ReadWriteWeb frames the addition as a competitive move against Bing Maps' PhotoSynth powers , but it also seems like a fairly logical progression of Maps and Picasa integration. If you've found some neat stuff in Street View's photo views, feel free to link it up in the comments. [ Google LatLong via SearchEngineLand
