Hey, iTunes Ping: What About the Bands?

Update: Commenter Bruce Hoffman contacted TuneCore about this issue and received this response: “Thanks for writing! Not only will Ping have ‘People’ accounts, but it will also have ‘Artist’ accounts that allow musicians to upload and create their own pages featuring their pictures, videos, tour-dates, music recommendations and a lot more. We were fortunate enough to speak with Apple today to begin working on getting the first TuneCore Artists Ping accounts set up. We will be able to get more and more TuneCore Artists set up over the next weeks as Apple works to authenticate and set up Ping Artist accounts for the millions of artists within iTunes.” Plenty of criticism has already been directed towards the new social network that’s baked into iTunes 10 — Ping — with an emphasis on the user (not to mention rumblings about a fleeting Facebook integration ). But there’s one contingent of users no one has really mentioned yet: the bands , many of which are still unable to get in on the action as of this afternoon. Immediately after hearing about Ping yesterday, I sent out a flurry of e-mails to band friends, urging them to, “Get on this now!” Everyone was stoked, ready to replace their MySpace pages with revenue-making destinations on the brand new iTunes social network

HP picks up Phoenix’s HyperSpace, HyperCore and Flip instant-on assets for $12m

Phoenix Technologies, remember those guys ? Yeah, us either . Not that we really minded its instant-on OS or anything, but considering that full-fledged operating systems can boot up in under a minute on most machines, they're kind of a hard sell. Unless you're selling to HP, of course, which is on somewhat of an acquisition rampage.

Deepak Chopra Apologizes for Starting Earthquake on Twitter

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake was felt in California and parts of Mexico and the southwestern United States today, and alternative physician and transcendental meditation guru Deepak Chopra used his Twitter account to apologizing for causing it. He was probably just kidding, of course, but his tweets garnered several amused reactions regardless. They’ve made for an entertaining Twitter moment. Shortly after the earthquake occurred, Chopra tweeted out the following: He explained further in his next tweet , saying: CNN reports that the earthquake originated in Baja California at 3:40 PM Pacific time then spawned five aftershocks, including a 4.1-magnitude shake in the northern California town of Santa Rosa. There haven’t been any reports of significant casualties or damage despite the severity of the initial quake, but the quake was felt as far away as Phoenix, Arizona.

Online Image Editor Aviary Now Entirely Free [Free]

Aviary Phoenix, a really powerful and reader favorite online image editor, used to charge $25 per year for private online image saving and other select features. As of yesterday, though, the Phoenix editor's gone entirely free. What the unlocking mainly does is remove a few minor annoyances that free users might have encountered before. You could always save your images and project files on Aviary and download them, but they were viewable by the searching public

New HiRISE Images Show Chilly, Frost-Covered Phoenix Lander [Space]

Mars isn't exactly the warmest place during the winter transition, but as the first few rays of sunshine lick at the planet's surface we're able to make out the Phoenix lander shivering under a cover of dry-ice frost. We're able to see the lander in the images taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter despite the low-light conditions and the reflective effects of the carbon dioxide frost. The HiRISE team did have to play around with the contrast and angles to get the image we see, but how many pictures pass without some sort of processing anyway.
