Twitter Temporarily Turns Off “Who to Follow”

If your Twitter page looks different, don’t freak out; Twitter is just temporarily disabling the new “Who to Follow” feature. On the Twitter Status blog, Twitter notes that it has “temporarily turned off the … feature” and that it will be “restored as soon as possible.” Twitter rolled out “Who to Follow” last month as a way to give users suggestions for other users to follow. These suggestions are based on things like, the people you follow, the people they follow and other factors. Since the feature was launched, it has been plagued by bugs; many of us at Mashable have found that it always produces the same recommendations.

Facebook Chat to Drop IE6 Support

If you are still using Internet Explorer 6.0 , Facebook has a new incentive for you to move onward and upward: Facebook Chat . On its blog today, Facebook announced that its chat feature will no longer support IE 6. Like an increasing number of web applications, the social network cited the 9-year-old browser’s inability to support new features as the reason for dumping it. Facebook won’t be flipping the IE 6 off-switch until September 15, so users will have a few weeks to evaluate alternatives or try to convince the boss to finally make the move to IE 8 , Google Chrome or Firefox

The Colombian police are investigating the case, but are unsure who posted the list, or why it contains these particular names. According to CNN and the local media outlets, two killings happened on August 15, two days before the the list was posted on Facebook, warning the people named they had three days to leave the town of Puerto Asis. At first the police thought the list was a joke, but then a second list with 31 additional names appeared, and a third person on the list was killed on August 20. People Magazine Launches iPad App

People magazine launched its iPad app early this morning despite reports it would be delayed due to issues over photo licensing agreements. Photographers were reportedly upset with People’s assertion that the magazine shouldn’t have to pay extra fees when it uses agency photos already featured in the print issue on the app. A spokeswoman for People told Mashable via e-mail that discussions with photo agencies “never had anything to do” with the app’s launch date, but rather People wanted “to have the best product possible” and to make sure the subscription verification interface was working. With regard to reports about photo licensing issues, People told The Hollywood Reporter that the magazine currently has the rights to use agency photos under their current contracts. Much like Vanity Fair ’s iPad app, People’s app does not differ much from the present publication

5 Tips for Aspiring Copywriters and Art Directors

Between high-profile awards shows and TV series like Mad Men , more and more of the American population are coming to realize the glamor of the advertising industry — and there’s perhaps no role more inspiring, frustrating and, yes, sometimes glamorous, than the role of an advertising creative. Advertising creatives fall into two main branches: copywriters, who are responsible for coming up with creative concepts and writing copy for ads (as necessary), and art directors, who work with copywriters to fashion visual solutions to creative problems. Good copywriters and art directors are often promoted to become creative directors (CDs), executive creative directors and, ultimately, chief creative officers (CCOs). Of course, creatives don’t run the entire advertising creation process; they work with talented teams of account managers, producers, project managers, brand planners and more to oversee branding and creative work for clients.
