Is Google Search Coming to Your TV?

Google is testing a new television programming search service in conjunction with Dish Network, according to The Wall Street Journal . The service, which appears to be very much in a limited testing phase, runs on a special set-top box and apparently searches content from both the Dish programming guide, as well as web video services like YouTube . Without any details about the specific implementation, it’s unclear how similar this venture is to the new upcoming TiVo Premiere service that was announced last week. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of The Wall Street Journal’s report dealt less with the service itself and more with the technology that powers the set-top box. Apparently, portions of Google’s Android OS power the Google-enabled device

AT&T announces slew of network investments for 2010

AT&T's preaching about the mucho dinero it's dropping into renovating its network to pretty much anyone who'll listen these days, and a veritable cornucopia of press releases this week start to go into detail on some of the upgrades we'll be seeing over the course of 2010. We're counting at least a dozen here, covering everything from New York City to Florida to Oklahoma, but the message is basically the same in every one: more cell sites, more 3G coverage, more backhaul. AT&T liberally pimps its nine-figure investments in most states over the past several years, too -- but of course, phones need spectrum to communicate, not blank checks and promises. Let's see how we finish the year after those iPads, next-gen iPhones, and AT&T-compatible Nexus Ones (our fingers are crossed) have had a chance to slam the airwaves for a bit, shall we? AT&T announces slew of network investments for 2010 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 11:16:00 EST.

Xbox LIVE Beats PlayStation Network in Reader Vote

We had a very hotly contested matchup this week in our long-running Faceoff series , with Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE going up against Sony’s PlayStation Network for favorite online console gaming service. After an astounding 35,055 votes we’re ready to declare the winner… … and Xbox LIVE takes the win ! They’ll obviously get an achievement rather than a trophy for this victory. Just a day or so ago the polls were holding steadily even so it was definitely in the home stretch here that XBLA pulled ahead. The final tally reads 19,858 for Xbox LIVE (57%) and 14,258 for PSN (41%), with a surprisingly small tie vote of only 939 (3%)

AT&T CEO: iPad will be mostly used on WiFi, won’t drive many new 3G subscriptions

We all know by now that AT&T has secured the rights to furnish US iPad owners with 3G connectivity, but apparently the market desire for that service won't be quite as big as we might have expected. That comes straight from Randall Stephenson himself, AT&T CEO and eternal believer in the power of i-branded devices, so it may have some legitimacy to it. Surely Randall's dearest wish would be to announce his network is about to be overwhelmed by new subscribers, and the rather cooler news has already caused a small dint in AT&T's stock price.

Pocket-sized downloads: Ars explores DSiWare and PSP Minis

With the release of the PSP Go and the DSi , both Sony and Nintendo brought small, downloadable games to traditional gaming handhelds. It's a concept that has been met with mixed success on the iPhone and other mobile platforms, spawning both a refreshing wave of creative new games and a glut of shovelware. But several months after the launch of the DSiWare shop and PSP Minis on the PlayStation Network, both services are still struggling to find their legs. Ars spoke with several developers to get their perspectives on the burgeoning marketplaces

NBC to Live Stream U.S. vs. Finland Olympic Hockey Semifinal

While NBCOlympics.com has a really cool Twitter Tracker , much of its online strategy for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver has left much to be desired. In addition to not airing events live to people on the West Coast, the network has made some downright bizarre decisions about what events to stream online at NBCOlympics.com. Fortunately, the Men’s Hockey Semifinals between the USA and Finland will be streaming live today at 3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PST
