Apple Patents Reveal Plans for Mobile Social Networking App
The smart folks at Patently Apple have uncovered some documents published to the USPTO today detailing a social application Apple is building for the iPhone . The application, known as iGroups, is designed to let people meet up and exchange information in a way that is focused on ensuring privacy. The USPTO documents are pretty detailed in terms of how the application — and the related patents — work. The big takeaway seems to be that group controls are granular and that location uses something called “virtual GPS” — which appears to be using either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as proximity tools.

Google Maps 4.1 for Android brings multiple account support, trippy live map wallpaper
Google's been iterating its Maps client for Android devices at a positively ridiculous pace lately, burning through versions 3.4 and 4.0 in a span of just a few days last month -- but hey, March is upon us, which apparently means it's time for another fresh cut. This time around we're looking at 4.1, though the mere 0.1 bump in the version number really doesn't do this thing justice -- they've redesigned the results screen, added a swipe gesture for moving between results, served up a new Latitude widget for the home screen, and brought in support for multiple Google accounts (for seeing different Buzz follows, for instance). The icing on the cake, though, is a new live wallpaper for Android 2.1 phones that's a live map of your location, which sounds absurdly awesome -- assuming it doesn't beat your battery to a bloody pulp with constant GPS access, of course. It's available now from the good ol' Market for devices running Android 1.6 and up, so if you're on a device that's still stuck on Cupcake, feel free to shake your fist angrily at the sky a couple times

Windows Phone 7 Series’ cutting room floor is an extravaganza of bright colors and chunky fonts
It's hard to argue that Windows Phone 7 Series' Metro UI concept isn't utterly unique in the mobile world, but it was wasn't the only option Microsoft considered -- far from it, in fact. The company has published a bunch a design concepts it churned through on its wild, wacky journey to finalizing Metro as we know it today, and one thing's for certain: they'd clearly planned on simple, square lines, partially-obscured typography, and in-your-face colors pretty much from day one. After careful consideration of everything they've got here, we still think we like the production design best, but that's kind of besides the point -- why, pray tell, couldn't these have just been user-selectable themes? Windows Phone 7 Series' cutting room floor is an extravaganza of bright colors and chunky fonts originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 23:02:00 EST.

14 Essential iPhone Apps for Small Business Users
This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum , where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Apple’s iPhone wasn’t originally conceived as a business-focused device; however, the advent of the App Store and the rapid rise in usage and adoption has really given the platform — and the phone — some pretty great use cases for business users. The iPhone App Store has more than 150,000 applications and separating the wheat from the chaff, especially when you have a specific goal or task in mind can be difficult. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of some of the best applications for the iPhone for the small business user. Access to Files and Folders Something that really sets this generation of smartphone devices apart from devices of even five years ago is the rise in cloud computing and ubiquitous connectivity.

AT&T Intros Eco-Friendly Phone Charger
AT&T is offering folks the chance to be a small part of a big difference as it announces the launch of the ZERO Charger for phones. When you leave your mobile phone charger plugged in when its not actually juicing up a handset, you waste electricity – some estimates see the overall power suck from such scenarios as enough to power 24,000 homes for a year. That’s where AT&T ZERO charger comes in — it works by automatically sensing when a cell phone is not plugged in and cutting the power supply from the wall socket.

New MacBook Pro, Air and Mac Pro pricing potentially leaked by Apple ads
Could this be another example of online advertising presaging the onset of a hardware upgrade from Cupertino? Apple's ads on Australian tech pub PC Authority have been spotted displaying some rather peculiar price tags for its flagship mobile and desktop computers. Whereas Cupertino's Aussie online store lists the most affordable versions of the MacBook Pro , MacBook Air and Mac Pro at A$1,599, A$1,999 and A$3,599, respectively, the above, official-looking ads would seem to disagree.

Xobni Mobile Comes to BlackBerry
Xobni (that’s inbox spelled backwards), a company that makes an e-mail management plugin for Microsoft Outlook, is officially releasing Xobni Mobile for the BlackBerry platform today, bringing the power of Xobni to your mobile device. Xobni is a killer tool for anyone who deals with tons of e-mail, because it makes finding messages and attachments, getting widespread contact information about a person and even searching through multiple PST databases easy. Plus, it integrates with social media tools like Facebook and Twitter . Think of Xobni as kind of a cross between something like what Apple’s Spotlight search, Google’s contact tools and a synchronized address book like Plaxo. Xobni Mobile for BlackBerry is designed to make it possible to access all of your most important contact info — irrespective of whether or not a person is in your BlackBerry Address Book — directly from your phone

Samsung confirms slate PC in the works
Well, the details are extremely thin here folks, but it looks like Samsung's working on a tablet PC -- or 'slate' if you're into the new fangled lingo -- just like pretty much every other manufacturer on the planet. Speaking with APC (the website, not the clothier), Philip Newton, director of Samsung Australia's IT division, said that the company is working on a slate PC for the second half of 2010 that will have "PC-grade processing power and connectivity" -- two things Newton had previously cited as the main things lacking in the iPad . That's really all there is to go on -- no specs or features mentioned, though Samsung has been vaguely hinting that the tablet, when it appears, will run on Intel's Atom platform, which sounds about right.
