ASUS introduces O!Play HD2, first networked media player with USB 3.0

Chances are you're not a part of the SuperSpeed revolution yet, and that's okay. It's early days yet, but ASUS is doing its part to make that transition to USB 3.0 a little more appealing with its O!Play HD2. A follow-up to the earlier O!Play models , the HD2 offers what looks to be plenty of connectivity options (we're seeing USB, memory cards, and eSATA) and promises a "wealth of cloud infotainment." ASUS isn't sharing any more details than that right now, but we're going to try to track this guy down on the CeBIT show floor and, when we find, it you can be sure we won't spare the hard questions. SPlayer Media Player for Windows Handles Multiple Formats [Downloads]

Windows: The Windows Media playback field is a crowded one, and it's tough to find a tool that can handle multiple playback formats. SPlayer is a gem of an app that manages just about everything audio and video. SPlayer gets the job done thanks to binary codecs, and even plays Blu-Ray and DVDs. It has most of the bells and whistles you'd expect to find in a media player, including fullscreen mode, basic audio controllers, continuous playback options, and subtitles

MediaMonkey 3.2 Syncs with More Devices, Adds Auto Folder Watching [Updates]

Windows: We dig MediaMonkey for its album art and tag-fixing powers, but the free jukebox software can do so much more—like sync to nearly any smartphone or MP3 player, and automatically manage your music library. The marquee feature in MediaMonkey 3.2 is expanded device support, including WebOS devices like the Palm Pre and Pixi, the latest iPods and iPhones, Android phones (as general USB storage devices), and many more. MediaMonkey's also added automatic folder watching to the free version, something previously available only in its paid Gold edition. And MediaMonkey also added in support for Windows 7's right-click taskbar feature, jump lists, showing recently played tracks, playlists, and other controls

Archos 9 pre-orders reportedly delayed until December, retail release pushed to 2010

Well, we just caught sight of it in all its dissected glory courtesy of the FCC last week, but it looks like the Archos 9 tablet / media player may not be quite so close to a release after all. According to UMPC Portal , Archos now says that the initial batch of pre-orders won't start shipping until "early December" -- well past the already-missed October 22nd launch date -- while the retail release has been pushed back all the way until sometime in the first quarter of 2010. Let's just hope the price doesn't keep going up in the meantime. Viewsonic offically launches VPD400 MovieBook media player

Viewsonic was showing this one off way back in July alongside a slew of other gear, but it's just now gotten fully official with its VPD400 MovieBook media player, which is apparently available right away for $129.99. That will get you a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display, 8GB of internal memory, a micro SD card slot for more, an AV out port for some bigger screen viewing (not HDMI, it seems), and a promised 12 hours of battery life for audio and six for video -- not to mention your choice of black, pink or white color options. Not too shabby, just don't go expecting anything fancy like WiFI or a touchscreen.

ViewSonic’s VMP70 media player does 1080p for less than a hundie

The WD TV is still more or less the king of the tiny media player boxes, but now Viewsonic is getting into the game at a lower price point -- and minus the whole network compatibility bit. The VMP70 is a "direct connect" media device, so it will play content from your choice of USB-compatible storage, pumping it at up to 1080p to your display over HDMI or component cables, also sporting composite for lower-def fare. It packs an S/PDIF port to get clean audio, and supports a slew of formats including the usual suspects (DivX,Xvid,H.264) along with some slightly less usual ones (RM/RMVB, DTS, OGG). It's all available for an MSRP of $129.99, but order now and you'll get special holiday pricing of $98.99. Operators are standing by..

Cowon iAudio 9 and iAudio E2 media players make the scene stateside

Cowon-heads of the world, you are in for a treat today. It looks like not one but two of the company's snack-sized media players are finally hitting the big time. First off, the iAudio 9 PMP is due to hit the states within a week. Available in 8GB and 16GB denominations, for some reason the domestic version will be available only in black. Aside from supporting the usual compliment of media files (MP3, FLAC, Ogg, WAV, APE, WME, XviD, and WMV videos) this guy sports composite video out.

Mysterious Cowon W2 Is an Atom-Equipped Something or Other [Cowon]

It's a bit of a stretch in reasoning, but some leaked docs seem to confirm media player manufacturer Cowon is dipping a toe into the world of tablets with the Atom-powered W2. Here's what we know: Not much. The leaked sheet contains no image, no real specs and no launch date. The tablet speculation only arrives once you consider Cowon's MO, paired with Atom. Yeah, definitely a stretch, but an interesting one to consider on this lazy, post-Halloween Sunday afternoon.

DoubleTwist for Windows Adds Native Libraries, iPhone Support [Updates]

Windows: The promised Amazon MP3 Store is still a week or so away, but doubleTwist has upgraded its Windows media manager with as-you-type search, native libraries without WMP or iTunes, and syncing with the latest iPhone and iPod touch models. The improvements in version 2.4 of doubleTwist for Windows help it catch up to its Mac sibling, adding some frankly obvious artist/album/genre sorting and music search, as well as freeing you from needing to set up Windows Media Player or iTunes libraries first, then hop over and start syncing your media to any device with doubleTwist. Newly refreshed iPhone and iPod touch support is obviously another big feature for doubleTwist's goal of being a real iTunes alternative—which, when we took a look last week , wasn't a role it has quite grown into yet, at least on Windows systems. doubleTwist 2.4 is a free download for Windows systems, with a Mac version also available (that already includes Amazon MP3 Store support). If you've already got doubleTwist installed, hit the Help menu and choose Check for updates to upgrade in place.

Create a Perfect, Customized Boss Key With AutoHotkey [Autohotkey]

We've all been there—trying to do something else while we're supposed to be working for the man. Sure, they are paying us, but can't we get a little break every now and then? There are dozens of "Boss Key" applications out there that hide windows with a simple keystroke whenever the boss walks by, but most of them aren't tailored very well to your own situation—or just aren't customizable enough for my tastes—so I set about to create the perfect boss key with AutoHotkey. By the end of this guide, you should be able to make your own custom boss key that does exactly the kind of hiding you want. We're not actually advocating that you slack off at work, trick your boss, or do anything that goes against your employer's policies to the extent that you get you sent home with a pink slip.
