Boxee Box: Social Media Center Gets its Own Hardware

Besides going into beta mode in December, social media-enabled media center Boxee has some other great news in store: it will be getting its own dedicated hardware device soon too. Right now in alpha Boxee runs on Mac, Linux and Windows systems — but a dedicated device likely means a far cheaper hardware option and will obviate the need to devote an entire machine to running Boxee in your living room setup. Boxee will be showing off mockups and divulging more details about the forthcoming box at their Beta Unveiling event December 7 in New York. For now the company isn’t saying who the partner in the consumer electrics space is, so it will be interesting to find out who is helping them develop the box. CEO Avner Ronen mentioned in the announcement post that during the Boxee alpha unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year they were approached, perhaps unsurprisingly, by a number of manufacturers interested in getting Boxee embedded into some sort of hardware device, whether their own existing set-top boxes or a new dedicated device for Boxee.

Gopher: Content > Presentation

If you spend any amount of time using the Internet as we know it today, chances are you have suffered some inconvenience from the variety of interpretations of the various "standards" used to create the web. Doesn't it make you long for a real standard , where content is king, and presentation of said content is the same, regardless of whether you're shopping for shoes or looking for an academic journal?

Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Norman Bates, and Jon & Kate are just some of Hollywood’s most horrifying characters. Although we still think the cineplex is the best way to get your big-league scare-on, the Internet is a full-on treasure-trove of excellent scary content. While it’s true you can buy and download movies online, more and more often, streaming services are offering ways for film fans to tune in to great content for free.
