Magazine publishers said to be ‘very close’ to digital distribution deal
Rumors of magazine publishers striking a deal to make their content available for digital devices -- even a certain tablet -- have been around for quite a while now, but it looks like something may finally be close to really happening. As The New York Observer reports, Time Inc. exec John Squires has been taking the lead on the initiative (and is apparently set to become interim head of the new company), which would see rival publishers including Time, Condé Nast and Hearst join together to make over 50 magazines available in digital form, and for a variety of devices. Details are otherwise a bit light, as you might expect, but one source familiar with the situation reportedly says "it's very close and more imminent than it's been," while others familiar with the plans say they "compare to iTunes," and that you'll be able to buy " new and distinct iterations" of magazines like of The New Yorker or Time -- and even actual print editions, for that matter. EyeWriter Allows Man To Paint Despite Paralysis [This Cyborg Life]
Before disease took his ability to move, Tony Quan was an amazing graffiti artist. Now he is completely paralyzed, save for his eyes, and still an amazing artist. Seeing how he works left me with tear-streaked cheeks.

Data breach notifications one step closer to law… again
Every time there's a major data breach in retail or government, there's a chorus of frustrated customers trying to find out whether their information was exposed to would-be identity thieves. The problem is that it's near impossible to find out this information unless the organization in question takes the initiative to notify customers with exposed data. This, quite frankly, happens very slowly. In response to this annoying trend, members of Congress have introduced legislation that would require organizations to notify customers when their information is no longer secure

City of Los Angeles Goes Google for $7.2 Million
It looks like those Going Google billboards are actually good for something, as the Los Angeles’ city council has just unanimously approved a Google Apps deal worth $7.2 million. According to CNET , LA would become one of the largest government agencies, outside the District of Columbia, to make the switch to using hosted Google email and application services. However, security concerns over storing information in the cloud did factor into the process and have yet to be 100% aleviated. Apparently the deal hinges around an agreement with Computer Sciences Corp, a contractor who would need to agree to pay a penalty should there be a security breach.

Nigeria actually arrests, shuts down online scammers
It turns out Nigeria is taking measures to fight Internet scams—law enforcement there has shut down close to a thousand websites and made 18 arrests as part of a new initiative to save the nation's reputation and crack down on Internet scammers. The program, called "Project Eagle Claw," has only just begun, but Nigerian officials expect it to be fully operational in 2010. Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) described the initiative as "a renewed bid to clap down" (*clap clap*?) on Internet fraudsters. So far, the agency claims to have shut down 800 scam sites in addition to making the arrests, with many more apparently to come. EFCC Chairman Farida Waziri said Wednesday during a US address to the National Conference of Black Mayors that Nigeria was working with Microsoft to fully deploy Project Eagle Claw, and that it will soon be able to take down up to 5,000 fraudulent e-mails per month
