“The Cove” Movie Uses Oscars to Promote Social Media Activism
One of the men responsible for The Cove — 2010 Oscar winner for best documentary — used the Academy Awards stage to promote a web and mobile-based activism campaign tied to the film’s save-the-dolphins subject matter. During the acceptance speech, dolphin activist Ric O’Barry held up a sign saying, “Text DOLPHIN to 44144.” The cameras cut away to the crowd for several seconds — possibly to avoid taking sides on the contentious issue of dolphin hunting. Viewers who caught it and followed the sign’s instructions were subscribed to text updates and plugged into the larger social media campaign for the film and its cause.

Hundreds of Twitter Accounts Hacked [WARNING]
It seems hundreds of Twitter accounts have started to Tweet out “weight loss” product spam today. Specifically, users who have had their accounts hijacked are Tweeting the message “I lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks!” and links to diet sites. Our source counts over 200 rogue tweets so far tonight. It’s not just new users getting caught out: famous tech pundit John C. Dvorak (@therealdvorak) got caught up in the attack, and was none too pleased

Etacts Launches First Implementation of oAuth For Gmail IMAP Accounts
Earlier this week, we reported on a number of new security enhancements that we expect Gmail to launch in the next few days, including oAuth support. It looks like we were right: a small startup called Etacts , which launched last month, has just implemented oAuth for Gmail IMAP accounts, allowing Etacts to securely tap into your email without the security risks associated with handing over your Gmail password. This appears to be the first public implementation of Gmail IMAP oAuth support. For email services, this is a big deal. We expect Google to announce support for the new feature more broadly this week.

Sony Bloggie PM5K Camcorder Review: A Swiss Army Knife That’s Gone Dull [Camcorders]
Sure, it has a ridiculous name, but on paper the Bloggie's got it all—1080p video capture, the ability to switch resolutions and frame rate, plus a lens attachment that lets you record 360-degree videos. Bells and whistles galore. Sony thought adding all these bells and whistles would make a difference. They were— as ever —running late to the pocket-camcorder race, but thought strapping on featured-laden running shoes would help it take on its rivals. Unfortunately, Sony was racing against the Flip Ultra HD (our favorite pocket camcorder ) - a much smaller kid sure, but he'd been around the block many times before and was very streamlined
