Twitter Search Volume Up 33% Since April

According to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone , who spoke at the Aspen Ideas Festival recently, Twitter is handling 800 million search queries per day. At Twitter’s Chirp conference in April, Stone said Twitter was serving 600 million search queries per day — 33% less than the microblogging service is processing now. The number reminds us of Bing’s impressive growth last year, when Nielsen reported that Microsoft’s search engine was growing 22.1% month-over-month. However, Bing was unable to continue growing at that rate; it lost 5% of its stake in the search market the very next month.

70,000+ People Get Facebook Tagged in Huge Panoramic Photo

At last weekend’s Glastonbury Festival , the legendary UK music and performing arts event, a huge photo was taken of 70,000 enthusiastic fans. Now this picture, which was snapped during the halftime of the England-Slovenia World Cup Match, is being circulated around the web and tagged via Facebook Connect . The panoramic photograph has already been tagged with thousands of people and is, in all likelihood, the most-tagged photo in existence. The experience is a bit like Where’s Waldo for the digital age, where oddly dressed cartoon characters are replaced by real people. If you enable Facebook Connect, you can tag yourself and your friends

Researchers can’t predict long-term Deepwater impact on ocean

As oil continues to flow into the gulf of Mexico from the exploded Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, people are beginning to wonder what the effects of the spill will be in both the long and short term. Unfortunately, many scientists, even experts in the field, have precious little in the way of answers. According to a

Vimeo Announces First-Ever Festival and Awards [VIDEOS]

Today, Vimeo is announcing and taking submissions for its first-ever Vimeo Festival & Awards — and to spread the word, the video-sharing site has posted some rad vids (naturally) to promote the event. Vimeo , who is currently celebrating its fifth anniversary, is an online video site that focuses more on content creators than viral vids. We spoke with Vimeo yesterday, who stressed to us the importance of its community — which it says is made up of talented filmmakers. Vimeo decided to honor this community with a festival — packed with workshops and screenings — as well as awards given in 10 categories

Robots and Rockets: A Tour of Maker Faire [VIDEO]

Maker Faire is the stuff of legends: Robots, rocket ships, pyrotechnics, dragons, vehicles for land and sea, and ever so much more. Even if your interests aren’t roughly aligned with those of a four-year-old boy, Maker Faire is still pretty cool. This celebration of all things DIY has something for everyone, from steampunks to crafters to techies to parents. The sheer diversity of both the crowd and the projects presented is something to see.

Playstation 3 Owners Get a New Service for Great Films

Today at the Cannes Film Festival, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced that MUBI — formerly known as The Auteurs — will be coming to the PlayStation 3 this fall. Think of MUBI as Netflix programmed by Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael and Martin Scorsese. Although the larger MUBI service remains available throughout the world, the PlayStation 3 partnership will only be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Australia, New Zealand and the other countries where SCEE has dominion. The MUBI PS3 app will be very much like the Netflix app . Once downloaded, users will be able to browse available films and then watch them either à la carte or pay for an unlimited monthly subscription.

YouTube rental selection expanded; sadly, most films still lack explosions

Are you looking for yet another way to stream Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired ? Netflix and iTunes not doing it for you? Apparently YouTube's first, tentative step into on-demand rentals (some sort of Sundance Film Festival cross-promotion early this year) went well enough, and the company's started offering an extended range of movie and TV episodes for your viewing pleasure. Depending on the flick, anywhere between $.99 and $3.99 will get you 48 hours access, paid through Google Check-Out. Not too many Hollywood blockbusters are on tap, but if you're in the mood for a documentary, indie, or foreign film, hit up the source link to see for yourself.

5 Things You Need to Know About Location-Based Social Media

Kevin Nakao is VP of Mobile & Business Search for WhitePages , a Top 40 Web and Mobile Publisher. You can find him on Twitter , and on the Whitepages Blog where he writes about mobile, local, and social media. While last year’s SXSW seemed to serve as the “coming out” party for location-based services (LBS), maybe this year’s conference signifies the migration of these platforms into mainstream culture.

“Earth Days” PBS Documentary to Premiere on Facebook

Feature-length documentary film Earth Days will premiere on Facebook with a live video stream and a chat at 8 PM EST on April 11, more than a week before the over-the-air PBS television premiere at 9 PM EST on April 19. The film chronicles the history of Earth Day in the United States and investigates issues related to the today’s American environmentalism movement. It has been playing the festival circuit and in select theaters for months, leading up to its PBS American Experience premiere. Earth Days has pulled a 70 rating on Metacritic — “generally favorable reviews.” The Facebook event will use a new social streaming platform provided by a company called Brand Networks

‘Predators’ Preview Debuts at SXSW

SXSWi (the South by Southwest Interactive conference) is certainly our favorite track of the SXSW experience, but it’s not the only portion of the festival taking place this weekend. Film goers are out en masse in Austin too, and directors — both big and small — are using the event to showcase their films. Or in some cases, using it to show off preview of their films.
