Verizon shelves plans for future FiOS rollouts, relocations to Massachusetts set to boom
'Tis fun while it lasted, yeah? Verizon's FiOS has provided a much-wanted (or much-needed, some would argue) sliver of competition in markets that were previously offered just one or two ISP options, and the wicked fast speeds available through the fiber-based service were just one big stream of cherries-on-top. We've personally noticed that the company has slowed down the rate at which it blasts out releases trumpeting new FiOS and FiOS TV markets, and now we know why: an Associated Press report notes that the operator has canned all public plans about expanding its FTTH home network, though it will continue to build-out where it had previously announced service (Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia, namely). Of course, Verizon never stated that it would be making FiOS a nationwide service, but after hitting at least some sections of 18 states, we had high hopes that it would keep on keepin' on. Unfortunately, it looks like you'll be forced to move to FiOS-heavy Massachusetts , or simply gaze endlessly from your apartment window knowing that you'll never feel the warm glow of a FiOS wire.

New Zealand relies on BGP router protocol to filter the ‘Net
New Zealand's government-run Internet filtering system is now running, and two ISPs are already using the system. Seven thousand websites are on the list, most dealing with child sexual abuse, bestiality, and other illegal content, as classified by the country's official censors (you too can be a censor for a day ). Such material has been illegal offline in New Zealand for years, so the expansion of the program to the Internet isn't a big surprise. But will it work? The government runs the filter, but ISP participation remains voluntary.

Biofuel expansion would send cattle into the rain forest
Biofuel production in the US has met with fairly mixed success, as the cost and fossil fuel use of corn-based ethanol has severely cut into the benefits provided by avoiding the use of fossil fuels. It's been a somewhat different story in Brazil, which has embraced ethanol derived from sugarcane and seen more promising results. The government has set aggressive targets for both ethanol and biodiesel production, but a study that will be published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science later this week urges caution: unless the goals are met through an integrated agricultural strategy, they'll drive deforestation that will offset most of the benefits. The study looked at the expansion of the two crops that are expected to drive biofuels growth in Brazil: sugarcane for ethanol, and soy beans for biodiesel.

Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite prices slashed
Microsoft this week reduced the price of its Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) as well as Microsoft Exchange Online, Microsoft Office SharePoint Online, and Microsoft Office Communications Online. The software giant also noted that it is adding support for 15 additional countries and regions later this week, bringing the total to 36 countries. The company noted that in just a year, it has already amassed more than 1 million paying users (excluding Live Meeting), so the expansion is just to keep up with the pace of demand.
