Apple Takes iPad Secrecy All the Way to 11

In order to have access to iPad testing units, developers and testers had to agree to keep the device tethered to a fixed object in an isolated room with blacked-out windows, according to a report by BusinessWeek . That’s pretty hardcore. It’s unclear from BusinessWeek’s report if that was a condition enforced before the iPad was unveiled to the public or if it’s something that will be kept up until the April 3 launch date. Apple is a notoriously secretive company, especially when it comes to new products. Outside of partnerships with content publishers like The New York Times, Wired and The Wall Street Journal who have either confirmed interest or already shown demonstrations of their applications, the few developers that do have access to the iPad are keeping their mouths shut

Barnes & Noble promises B&N eReader app for iPad near launch

Need a bit more evidence that the e-book download business is a whole lot different than the music download business? Then look no further than Barnes & Noble , which has just announced that it plans to make its B&N eReader app available for the Apple iPad "around the time" of the device's launch. Details are otherwise a bit light, but the app will be free, and is apparently "designed specifically" for the iPad, giving you access to all of the books, magazines and newspapers available in Barnes & Noble's eBookstore. Could a Kindle app be far behind? Barnes & Noble promises B&N eReader app for iPad near launch originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 12:29:00 EST.

iriver introduces D1000 ‘e-dictionary’ for Korea

So-called "e-dictionaries" don't often make the trip over here, but iriver broke that trend with its D5 clamshell device, which suggests that it just might also do the same with its new D1000 follow-up. Of course, like its predecessor, this device is quite a bit more than just a dictionary, with it packing a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 touch screen, 8GB or 16GB of storage, built-in WiFi, a DMB TV tuner, 720p video output, and a full range of media player features. Happen to live in Korea or planning a trip sometime soon? Then you can pick this one up right now for between 349,000 and 409,000 Korean won depending on the model and capacity, or roughly between $300 and $360. iriver introduces D1000 'e-dictionary' for Korea originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 17:27:00 EST.

Nokia Announces C5 “Smartphone”

Nokia has unveiled a new “smartphone,” the Nokia C5, a Symbian S60 third edition handset offering decidedly mid-range features in a slimline candybar design. While Nokia calls the device a “smartphone in a feature phone body,” what the C5 offers isn’t arguably that smart in an increasing competitive market. The Cseries device (which joins the existing Xseries, Eseries and Nseries) introduces a new series-themed naming convention with the number representing the functionality: one is the lowest and nine the highest. To put the device in the context of the rest of the series, Nseries is the flagship range, Xseries is said to focus on social entertainment, Eseries is aimed at business folk, while the Cseries has been introduced to make up Nokia’s “core” (read: mass market) range. The unveiling of the C5 shows that Nokia is still plugging away at the mid-range market with its capable yet uninspiring handsets that — along with the company’s offerings for emerging markets — could be called its bread-and-butter business, while struggling to create the next must-have mobile

PS3’s Torne DVR adapter gets moved up to March in Japan

Well, look at that. After a suite of delays and a confirmed launch in May , the Torne DTV DVR adapter for the PS3 (OMG, TLA overload) is actually getting released two months ahead of schedule. It'll ship on March 18, to be exact, which just so happens to be the birthday of a certain Engadget editor -- a certain editor who certainly won't be expecting one of these as a present, as it's highly unlikely that this device, or the all-inclusive bundle with a 250GB PS3, will ever see American shores.

iPhone Explorer Turns Your iPhone or iPod touch into a Disk Drive [Downloads]

Windows/Mac: Unfortunately the iPhone and iPod touch lack the ability older iPods had to run in Disk Mode. That's where iPhone Explorer steps in, allowing you manually manage files on your device, or just use it as a flash drive, without jailbreaking. iPhone browser is a lightweight application that has an easy drag-and-drop interface that lets you browse the contents on your iPhone. You can manually transfer your photos, music or movies from your device back to your computer, or just add files to the iPhone and fill up the unused space as extra storage

Nokia N900 micro-USB connectors prone to failure?

The N900's well on its way to developing a solid reputation as a hacker's dream, but here's the thing: hackers need a way to charge their device. Actually, we all do, which makes a trending problem with N900s in the field particularly worrisome. It seems that the micro-USB connector's surface mount design is causing it to become misaligned or disconnected completely, and affected users seem to be having mixed results getting the issue covered under warranty.

Now Taking Your Dog For a Walk Helps You Save on Flashlight Batteries [Pets]

There was a power outage earlier and I sat in the dark. Not because I don't have flashlights, but because I couldn't find the right batteries. Oh, if only I had a dog and one of Fido Fashion's power-generating leashes. Fido Fashion really thought this leash through
