Amazon Customers Now Order $1 Billion of Products Per Year via Mobile

Amazon –- who earlier this week made some noise by reporting that Kindle books now outsell hardcovers –- is out with another tale of the times stat: customers are now ordering more than $1 billion worth of products per year via mobile devices. In a statement, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said, “The leading mobile commerce device today is the smartphone, but we’re excited by the potential of the new category of wireless tablet computers. Over time, tablet computers could become a meaningful additional driver for our business.” Along those lines, the company recently launched an iPad-optimized version of its already popular iPhone app. With more than three million iPads now in circulation, and Amazon apps also available for Android and BlackBerry, it’s no surprise mobile is starting to convert into serious sales for the company. Amazon’s mobile ambitions don’t stop with shopping, though –- the company now offers Kindle on every major platform, and is also working to bring Amazon Payments (its PayPal rival) to third-party mobile applications.

Starbucks to Offer Free Internet to All Customers Starting July 1 [Dealhacker]

Starbucks has teamed up with Yahoo to bring free Wi-Fi to all customers starting July 1. The free Wi-Fi will be available at all U.S. locations according to the official Starbucks Twitter account , no registration required. It's cliche to joke about how there's a Starbucks on every street corner in some cities, but regardless of the quality of their coffee, I suppose there are worse things than free Wi-Fi on every corner. Current T-Mobile customers having hard time upgrading to HTC HD2 (updated with statement)

First, the good news: T-Mobile's HD2 is in stock online and apparently at many corporate-owned retail locations. Now, the bad: the carrier seems to be putting these things on lockdown right now, only offering them to new customers signing up for a fresh contract. This is a tactic T-Mobile has applied in the past, so we're not terribly surprised to see them do it here, too -- but it's still a disappointment, especially considering that the phone has been out for a few weeks now. Just goes to show you that a net add is worth considerably more than a loyal customer is (particularly one who's still under contract), but in the meantime, might we recommend the iHTC HD2

Adobe says iPhone / iPad adoption and ‘alternative technologies’ (cough, HTML5) could harm its business

Adobe might continue to crow about Flash and its importance on both the desktop and mobile devices, but there's no lying to investors, and the company is pretty blunt about the threat of the iPhone and iPad in the end-of-quarter Form 10-Q it just filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission: it flatly says that "to the extent new releases of operating systems or other third-party products, platforms or devices, such as the Apple iPhone or iPad, make it more difficult for our products to perform, and our customers are persuaded to use alternative technologies, our business could be harmed." Now, Adobe has to make doom-and-gloom statements in its SEC filings -- it also says that slowing PC sales or a failure to keep up with desktop OS development could harm its business -- but the timing is crazy here, since just yesterday Apple changed the iPhone OS 4 SDK agreement to block devs from using the upcoming Flash CS5 iPhone cross-compiler to build iPhone apps. What's more, Apple's also using HTML5 for its new iAd platform , which could potentially undo Flash's stranglehold on online advertising as well. Yeah, we'd say all that plus the recent push for HTML5 video across the web -- and from Microsoft -- could harm Adobe's business just a little . Better hope that final version of Flash Player 10.1 is everything we'd hoped and dreamed of, because Adobe's going to have to make a real stand here

Google Acquires Web Video Platform Episodic

Google has just made yet another acquisition: web video platform Episodic . Late last year, it was rumored that Google was interested in acquiring Episodic competitor Brightcove, but that deal never materialized. Now, Google gets a platform — which we first reviewed back in 2008 — that handles all aspects of video distribution — from the uploading, to the hosting, to the monetization and analytics. In a blog post, Episodic says that customers will experience “no interruption in service,” though we imagine we’ll eventually see Google’s advertising platforms integrated. Here’s Episodic’s full statement on the deal: “We are thrilled to announce that Episodic has been acquired by Google.

New Zealand relies on BGP router protocol to filter the ‘Net

New Zealand's government-run Internet filtering system is now running, and two ISPs are already using the system. Seven thousand websites are on the list, most dealing with child sexual abuse, bestiality, and other illegal content, as classified by the country's official censors (you too can be a censor for a day ). Such material has been illegal offline in New Zealand for years, so the expansion of the program to the Internet isn't a big surprise. But will it work? The government runs the filter, but ISP participation remains voluntary.

NSFW: Hey, America! Our draconian copyright law could kick your draconian copyright law’s ass

I’ve always had mixed feelings about the DMCA . On the one hand, as an author, I like that it gives me a way to stop illegal copies of my work being distributed in the US, so ensuring that I can continue to make a living without having to get a proper job. On the other hand, as an occasional journalist, I hate that it can also be used by trigger-happy lawyers to prevent certain embarrassing documents entering the public domain.
