Convert Your Nation Into Star-Shaped Islands And Save It From Sinking [Concepts]

The Maldives, a small nation consisting of 1,200 islands is gradually disappearing as sea levels rise. In an attempt to save the place, their government has signed off on the development of several "floating facilities" like this one. Dutch Docklands/Dutch Watervalley, makers of many floating homes, are the starry-eyed folks working with the Maldives government on this project and they intend on creating tiered—and yes, star-shaped—mini-cities which won't be bothered by rising sea levels.

Honda’s Space-Age Eco-Friendly Trike Gets Filmed From Every Angle [Concepts]

Seen through the eye of the YouTube gloryhole is Honda's eco-friendly trike , which debuted this week at the Geneva Motor Show . While it's just a concept, it's on display at the show where the battery-powered three-wheeler is being ogled by people OTHER THAN US. It makes me slightly teary at the thought. [ Electricpig ]

RIM dev webinar hints at BlackBerry OS of the future?

See that Storm -esque device there? You may have noticed that the home screen looks positively nothing like the experience you're used to -- and that's because it's not. Shown off as part of a slide deck in RIM's "Super Apps" webinar for developers last week, the company's official explanation is that this is a pure, off-the-cuff mockup, not indicative of anything they're working on for future devices or releases of BlackBerry OS. To be fair, when you take the shot in context with the bullet points and the fact that this presentation was geared squarely at devs, we can imagine that they really were just using it to get folks' creative juices flowing -- but it makes you wonder, doesn't it?

POLL: To Chatroulette or Not To Chatroulette?

A new voyeuristic phenomenon with a truly explosive name is sweeping the nation: Chatroulette. The video chat service takes those chat rooms of yore to a new level, allowing random strangers to spin the digital dial and connect with another willing soul out there in the ether — sometimes with disturbing results. If you have an Internet connection and ample surfing time, you’ve probably heard about Chatroulette by now — most likely in one of the many articles depicting the disturbing things that people have seen there (people dressed as animals, boobs, people dressed as celebrities, boobs, and people dressed.. well… in nothing at all).

Conceptual Live Checking Card Shames Users With Spending History [Concepts]

Sure, online checking accounts are but a mouse click away, but that's how the Facebook crowd does banking. I want the future. Break This Thermometer In Case of Booze Emergency [Design]

Not many thermometers claim to be well-designed and booze-filled. If you're ever left in a dry house, you at least have one more option. Then again, regular thermometers can get you messed up fast too (and dead). [ Unpluggd ]

Sagem Orga’s SIMFi merges WiFi with SIM cards at long last, turns any phone into a hotspot

Thought WiFi spectrum was congested now? You ain't seen nothin' yet, because SIM card provider Sagem Orga has hooked up with Telefonica to develop a marvel of modern technology called "SIMFi" that combines -- you guessed it -- WiFi with a run-of-the-mill SIM card like you'd slip in your cell. In practical terms, this means that you're able to turn virtually any phone (or "classic handsets," as the company calls them) into a WiFi hotspot accessible by authenticated laptops, MIDs, and miscellaneous wireless gadgets in the immediate vicinity.

eVouse Mouse Concept Bridges Regular Mice With Air Mice [Concept]

Air Mice are fine enough if you have to control an HTPC from your bed, across the room, they're usually inaccurate and finicky. Why not make it a regular mouse too? And lo, the eVouse is. This concept, which designer Marcial Ahsayane shoved a Microsoft logo on, transforms from a right-side-up B2 bomber in regular mouse mode to a holy-crap-stop-turning-so-sharply B2 bomber in air mouse mode

This Lockable USB Drive Concept Is Straight Out of a High School Nightmare [Concept]

Even if this lockable USB drive concept is turned into a real product, I won't be buying it. I barely mastered my locker's combination lock by the time I graduated high school, why would I want to repeat that nightmare? Named after Mr. Gates, Bill's USB is a clever concept and wonderful for security nuts who don't have an irrational fear of combination locks.

The Scale That Thinks It’s a Rug [Concepts]

This concept scale that doubles as a decorative rug might— might —be the thing to finally get me taking better care of myself. Designer Kwan Sunman's Rug With Scale project does away with the cold, judgmental form factors of your average bathroom scale, ensconcing it instead in a warm and inviting rug. The readout from the scale shows up on a small red tag that illuminates its user's current weight, previous weight, and goal weight to help chart progress.
