Rock Out with PixieTea and Her Amazing iPhone Band [VIDEO]

Remember the Stanford iPhone Orchestra and their kick-ass musical stylings? Well, there’s a new smartphone virtuoso on the scene by the name of PixieTea who could become more synonymous with the word “telephone” than Lady Gaga herself. The Chinese artist created a video and song — mostly on an iPhone 3GS — that has been going viral over in China. PixieTea’s video has become a hit on Youku (basically the Chinese YouTube), racking up 1,670,109 hits and counting since it was posted back in December. Gizmodo brought the vid to the attention of the U.S.

Newegg selling ASUS Eee Box with Red Flag Linux pre-installed

Well, Newegg just seems to be full of surprises these days. The latest example is this ASUS Eee Box (model EBXB202-BLK-E0037), which wouldn't be so remarkable if not for the fact that it comes pre-installed with the Chinese Linux distribution, Red Flag Linux. That helps bring the price down to just $189.99 after rebate, which also gets you the usual Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and the standard Intel integrated graphics.

BlackBerry Pearl 9100 to come in SureType and QWERTY flavors?

Remember Nokia's E52 and E55 ? Espoo took an interesting tactic with these two: start with the same basic phone and operating system, but offer it with two different keypad layouts (in fact, HTC did the same with its Touch Dual ). It's not a bad idea -- different strokes for different folks, right?

Baidu Gets $50 Million to Bring New Video Site to China

China’s 400 million or so Internet users will soon be able to enjoy a new online video service. Baidu, the country’s top search provider, has announced plans to create a new video-on-demand website. With the domain name Qiyi.com registered, Providence Equity Partners (a global private equity investment firm that put $100 million into the Hulu pot) will invest $50 million to develop the advertising-supported online video business — with Baidu retaining majority ownership. Rather than user-generated content, Qiyi.com will provide “premium licensed content” OK’d by regulators for the “lawful distribution of professionally produced media and entertainment content on the Internet,” according to the announcement

Augmented Reality Makes for Great Beer Goggles

Tiger Beer — a Singapore-brewed beer not associated with the now infamous golfer — is ready to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Tiger. It has recently released an iPhone app [ iTunes link ] that combines augmented reality and game play to help UK users discover the best their cities have to offer in terms of Chinese New Year-themed entertainment. After downloading the free application, you can use it to discover nearby restaurants and bars that serve Tiger Beer. The application works like most other AR apps, which means you can hold it up and rotate it in different directions around Chinatown to see the venue spots superimposed over your camera lens. You can also preview venue offerings and read up on reviews

Window G85HD PMP is somewhere between awesome and awkward

You know, the vast majority of Chinese PMPs are underwhelming, and we can't say for sure that the Windows G85HD is any different, but the video walkthrough of the user interface has us interested at the very lease. Reportedly, the all-white, touchscreen-centric device packs a Rockchip RK2806 processor, a 4.3-inch panel (800 x 480), 3.5mm headphone jack, 720p video output, 8GB or 16GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot, FM radio tuner, a Chinese-English dictionary and support for a multitude of file formats. There's nary a word on when and where you'll be able to find this, but if you find yourself situated in Shenzhen, feel free to scope things out at the local market and fill us in. [Thanks, Sere83] Continue reading Window G85HD PMP is somewhere between awesome and awkward Window G85HD PMP is somewhere between awesome and awkward originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Feb 2010 05:54:00 EST.

Pentax K-x DSLR goes pink for Valentine’s Day, naturally

You know what the world needs? Another stereotypical pink gadget to commemorate a Hallmark holiday. Bitterness and shame aside, it looks as if Pentax has decided that too few people were using its custom color shop to craft completely pink K-x DSLRs , and in the honor of Saint Valentine, the company has decided to roll out another stock hue to sell alongside the red, white, black and navy blue versions . It'll set you back around HK$5,990 (or $770 in greenbacks), but trust us, your honey is totally worth it.

Google Co-Founder: China Issue Could Be Resolved in a “Year or Two”

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said in a Q&A at the TED conference in California that he and Google “want to work within the Chinese system” to bring uncensored results to the Chinese people. Though he’s not expecting immediate success, he said “maybe in a year or two.” Brin was answering a question about his responsibility to the Chinese people who Q&A host Chris Anderson said would “feel all completely abandoned” if Google leaves. Brin went on to say: “A lot of people might think I am naive and that might be true.” Google released a statement of intent to pull out of China rather than acquiesce to the Chinese government’s mandates of political censorship of search results and other Internet data.

Remainders – The Things We Didn’t Post: That’s No Fun Edition [Remainders]

In today's Remainders: the unfun. Wait! Don't go. The items themselves are fun! They just involve unfun. We have a no fun WiFi school bus; a no fun eBook from the White House, an unspectacular Samsung smartphone reveal, and more. Boring Bus I recently took my first trip on a WiFi-enabled airplane

Pakistan, Iran, and… Australia? Let’s censor Google!

Imagine what being Google must be like. Since the start of the year, the company has roiled up world affairs with its decision to stop censoring Chinese search results, got the NSA to help it out with security , launched a new social media service called Buzz , and dropped a bombshell on the US by announcing a new 1Gbps fiber-to-the-home testbed that will serve up to 500,000 people. Crazy stuff, right? And it all happened in the last six weeks.
