Facebook Photo Tagging Coming to a Website Near You

Face.com — makers of facial detection and recognition products for Facebook photos — aims to extend photo tagging across the web. The service has released their API which developers can now use to build photo tagging capabilities on their own websites. The idea is that developers can take Face.com’s technology and apply photo tags for various purposes. Facebook users would essentially be able to tag images as they browse the web and personalize their experience on any website

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have just launched a social and global campaign to raise awareness about child slavery in Haiti with the goal to completely ban the “restavec” system that is promoting it. In an exclusive interview with Mashable, the couple explained to us exactly what is happening in the earthquake-devastated country, what they hope to accomplish through their foundation, and how people can use social media to spread the word. Shorty Awards Honor Twitter’s Finest Micro-Bloggers

The second annual Shorty Awards ceremony went down this week in New York City, honoring the community-nominated and voted on best of the best from Twitter. Awards were given in 26 official categories as well as a huge selection of crowdsourced community categories . The Twitter community was invited to contribute nominations beginning this January, with the intent of recognizing a user’s overall Twitter stream as opposed to particular tweets. Popularity determined a set of finalists in each category, which were then also reviewed by a panel of judges from the Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences . The winners, who gave 140-character acceptance speeches at Wednesday night’s ceremony, included Betty Draper (the popular fan-run account for the Mad Men character), Whole Foods in the brand category, Nathan Fillion in the celebrity category, and more.

Weird Al Has an Unconventional Sex Tape [VIDEO]

We don’t usually report on sex tapes over here at Mashable — standards , people — but when we heard that “Weird Al” Yankovic launched his own on his YouTube channel this past Monday, we took notice. Luckily, the vid is completely safe for work — unless you work in a bubble wrap factory. Yesterday this not-so-salacious vid — which features a fully clothed Yankovic lovingly playing with bubble wrap — only had around 300 views. Today it has more than 50,000. Why the rapid rise in interest?

“Misunderstanding”: Twitter Japan Now Says There Won’t Be A Subscription Model

We reported yesterday about Twitter Japan’s plans to start charging followers to view tweets from certain users starting January and explained why this paid subscription model could work in Japan . Well, please forget it, this won’t happen. Just a few minutes ago, Digital Garage (the company responsible for Twitter operations in Japan), issued a press release ( English PDF , Japanese PDF ) stating there won’t be any fee-based services of any kind on the site and that Twitter in Japan will remain completely free for the foreseeable future. There’s also a blog post by the Twitter Japan team (who just copied and pasted the press release text, providing no further explanation)
