Exclusive: Sprint’s Social Media Campaign for HTC EVO 4G Debuts Tonight

Sprint is set to debut the first 4G phone in the US on Friday – the HTC EVO – and is unsurprisingly making speed (4G can be up to 10x faster than 3G) the focal point of its marketing campaign. The first TV commercials hit the airwaves last night, but this afternoon Mashable got an early look at the rest of Sprint’s promotion plans, which include a major social media push. The theme of the social media campaign – which goes live tonight at midnight ET at sprint.com/firsts — echoes that of the TV commercials, encouraging users to perform a number of activities at 4G speeds and then let their friends know about it. Playing on a recent trend we’ve seen in other campaigns , Sprint’s offering up virtual badges when users perform EVO “firsts” including tweet, upload an EVO unboxing video, check-in on Foursquare or take the “first photo of an eight-person 4G hotspot” (a unique feature of the EVO) using their device. Those badges – which prominently feature “4G” images — can then be shared on Twitter and Facebook

1MillionShirts Leverages Social Media to Help Clothe Africa

A new clothing-themed charitable campaign from the guys behind lucrative social media marketing exercise I Wear Your Shirt is looking to get unwanted T-shirts out of your closet and onto the backs of a million people across Kenya, Uganda, DRC, Ghana, Liberia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Swaziland and South Africa. The 1MillionShirts project, launched this month, is asking for used (but decent) T-shirts to be sent in with a one dollar bill to help with container costs. The shirts will then be shipped to Africa to help clothe folks in need. As you’d expect, Jason and Evan are using social media to help promote the campaign with a Facebook page that is already racking up Likes, a Flickr tag to gather all relevant pics and the #1millionshirts Twitter hashtag to spread the word via Twitter. While the project is thus far U.S.-centric, it’s starting to generate some momentum across the pond too

Eden is now social: Lost Planet 2 Campaign preview

Because it was designed for co-op play, it's not quite fair to say that we really played the single-player part of Lost Planet 2 during our time with the game. Sure, you can play the Campaign mode alone, but you're given three computer-controlled teammates who are sometimes useful but often annoying. This is a game that has been designed for co-op; it will even include offline split-screen co-op, but that option wasn't available in our early copy of the game. Read the comments on this post

Why #Twestival Matters

Twestival, a global fundraising event organized via Twitter, takes place in more than 175 cities tonight. At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $262,000 for Concern Worldwide, helping to build schools for children without access to education. Why does Twestival matter? And what’s Twitter’s role in coordinating such campaigns? That’s the topic of my CNN column this week

AT&T Warns Teens: Don’t Text and Drive

The growing popularity of text messaging — especially by young adults — has had a really negative impact on vehicular safety, as more and more people text while behind the wheel. Earlier this year, it became illegal for bus drivers or truck drivers to text while driving, but the problem only continues to grow among drivers in general. AT&T is joining in the fight to educate people about the dangers of texting while operating a vehicle by launching a new texting and driving campaign with the slogan: “Txting & Driving: It Can Wait.” The U.S.’s second largest wireless carrier has created a website that has resources and safety guides for all drivers, but it’s clear that the focus is on teens. In addition to offering a pledge and contract for teens and parents, AT&T has a Facebook page dedicated to the cause, and even a widget you can insert into your own website to show your support. What do you think about the campaign?
