Ambitious Online Banking Alternative Scores $2.9 Million in Series A

Banksimple has just raised $2.9 million in a Series A round to fund their ambitious alternative online banking startup for full-service, fee-free banking. The round includes investments from First Round Capital, IA Ventures and Village Ventures, a collection of industry veterans with extensive startup portfolios. Banksimple’s mission is to reinvent the way consumers bank, both online and off. In 2011, the startup will offer bankers an online-only banking solution designed to eliminate traditional service fees, provide stellar customer service, offer predictive money management and integrate social media into the system.

Google to Power AOL Search for the Next 5 Years

Google and AOL have signed a deal that extends the search and advertising partnership between the two companies for another five years. The agreement also includes mobile search and adds a content sharing partnership with YouTube. In a statement , AOL CEO Tim Armstrong said, “After nearly a decade-long partnership in search, we’re looking forward to expanding our global relationship to mobile search and YouTube.

Pay for Starbucks Coffee with Your BlackBerry

Mocha frappuccino and soy latte lovers rejoice: Starbucks is rolling out its Starbucks Card Mobile App for BlackBerry tomorrow, September 2. In September 2009, Starbucks introduced its Starbucks Card Mobile app for iPhone and iPod touch , enabling the owners of those devices to reload their Starbucks payment cards, monitor their rewards cards and even pay for their purchases at 16 stores in Seattle and the Silicon Valley region. In June, the coffee company extended its mobile payment system to 1,000 Target stores in addition to the roster of Starbucks venues. Now all of this functionality has been adapted — and, in some respects, improved — for BlackBerry Bold , Curve , Storm and Tour users.

QR Codes Help Consumers Shop for Wine

Selecting the right wine for every occasion is a form of art most of us only pretend to understand. That’s why Lion Nathan Wine Group, a wine owner and importer, has put QR codes on wine bottles to help everyday wine buyers make better selections. Cellar Key , a joint initiative between Scanbuy and Lion Nathan Wine Group , applies QR code technology to the art of shopping for wine. Initially, Cellar Key will feature six wines from the Lion Nathan Wine Group.

Apple Overhauls iPod Lineup

Lots of news came out of today’s Apple press event , but in the words of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, iPods were “the entree of the day.” The iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod touch each received significant cosmetic and feature updates, while the iPod Classic was removed from the lineup. iPod Shuffle Apple has ditched the ill-received form factor of the third generation shuffles and returned to a format similar to the second gen iterations. Although the new shuffles have ditched the third gen form factor, it has retained soft features like voiceover and playlists. It will be available in a 2GB capacity for $49. iPod Nano The iPod Nano, on the other hand, has been completely rebooted.

Digg Crowns Former Amazon Exec New CEO

Digg has confirmed that it has hired Matt Williams from Amazon to replace Kevin Rose as CEO. Rose says that he will “remain actively involved in the product” but is handing over “day-to-day running of the business” to Williams. This news comes five months after Rose announced former CEO Jay Adelson would be leaving the company and about one month after the New Digg was first unveiled. At Amazon, Williams held various director-level and higher positions since 1999. Most recently, he was the company’s General Manager, Consumer Payments

Digital Coupon Clipping Comes to the iPad via CardStar

Today, a Verizon-backed startup is releasing its iPad application and introducing a new functionality — digital coupon clipping. CardStar makes mobile applications to digitally manage retailer club and membership cards. CardStar for iPad doubles as a personalized, digital circular for coupons. The app lets users discover coupons relevant to each of their stored rewards cards, clip and save them to their loyalty cards, and redeem them on their next shopping trip. Clipped coupons will automatically be deducted at the register for all applicable purchases

Hell Freezes Over: AutoCAD Returns to Mac

After an 18-year absence, AutoCAD is finally coming back to Mac OS X. Autodesk , the company that makes the CAD program that has become he defacto industry standard, last released a native Mac version of its flagship product in 1992. Not only is AutoCAD coming back to Mac OS X, Autodesk is also bringing an AutoCAD app to the iPad and iPhone. This app will let professionals import, modify and export CAD files on the go. Autodesk has already had success on the iPhone and iPad with its Sketchbook Mobile and Sketchbook Pro apps, but these are consumer-facing tools
