MessageParty = Chat Room + Geolocation + iPhone

MessageParty, an early-stage YCombinator -funded startup , takes the classic concept of a chat room and adds a geosocial twist by making any chat room location-aware. The app, which launched in the iTunes App store earlier this week, is very straightforward. Users can create public “parties” through the app that work just like group IM conversations. What sets MessageParty apart is that it makes these chat rooms location-aware

The World Celebrates Social Media Day [PHOTO & VIDEO]

The inaugural Social Media Day celebrated yesterday did exactly what it was intended to do: connect thousands of people face-to-face in their local communities, provide resourceful discussions around social media, and plant a seeds for ongoing monthly meetups that enable people to network and learn from one another. Not only did Victoria, British Columbia officially recognize it as Social Media Day , but so did Vancouver . The celebration stretched across time-zones, and included countless pieces of media being produced throughout the day, from more than 30,000 tweets to hundreds of photos to the many livestreams and videos to showcase what each different community was doing and connect it with the rest of the worldwide celebration. We want to thank all of our organizers that made these meetups possible. We’ve seen and heard great things about your meetups, such as the Cleveland meetup, which was able to get a live alpaca to attend (see video below), and have heard your plans to keep them going.

Keepin’ it real fake: Nokia X5 goes shanzhai in record time

Is this a new record? Not twelve hours after the Nokia X5 slider got official in Singapore , our friend Albert spotted this curious square-shaped, Nokia-branded KIRF in a flea market in Manaus, Brazil. Of course, this raises the horrible possibility that this odd-ball form factor just might be catching on somewhere -- but we're going to try and put it out of our minds it for the time being.

As Formspring.me Passes 700 Million Questions, Brands Start Taking Notice

Back in January, I wrote about a new Q&A service called Formspring.me that allowed users to have their friends “ask them anything”: sign up for a profile, and anyone can submit a question that you can choose to answer at your discretion. At the time the service had around one million users. Fast forward six months: the service now has over 12 million accounts and users have asked each other 700 million questions.  According to Quantcast, it’s the 61st most visited site in the United States. Formspring has also just launched a preview of its API in private beta, which you can request an invite to here .

While America has its “Red Sox,” “Shaq Attacks,” and “Super Bowls,” the rest of the world quietly engages in some fancy footwork with a quadrennial tournament to decide the best football team in the universe. To celebrate the 2010 World Cup, due to kick off on June 11th in South Africa (which, incidentally, America is also taking part in, so feel free to start getting very excited), we’ve scoured YouTube for the very best World Cup goals ever caught on film (think “touchdown,” but with no hands). See below for our picks, arranged in date order, as deciding between these beauties would be impossible. Be sure to voice your opinions, cheers, and trash talk in the comments! 1. Carlos Alberto, Brazil vs Italy, 1970 Italy looks out-played here as the Brazilians knock it around like a kick-about in the park, but it’s Pele’s class pass to Alberto that sets up the fab finale.

Brazil: The New Home of Financial Innovation?

Brazil is sort of a strange country to throw into the “emerging market” category. It’s not a particularly young country like India or Israel, nor is it a country like China or Russia that embraced capitalism fairly recently. Brazil is as old as the US and has had a decently built out infrastructure of things like roads and phone lines for some time. Yes, it’s a growing country with a young and stabilizing democracy that has a long way to go in terms of technology, modernization and bridging a quality of life between very wealthy and very poor
