Why QR Codes Are Poised to Hit the Mainstream
The QR code, or quick response code, is simply a two-dimensional bar code that came into being in 1994 and found a large audience in Japan. Stateside, however, QR codes — while clever for tying real-world objects to online content — have always remained on the outskirts of public awareness. Nonetheless, we’ve seen QR codes employed for creative purposes. The Detroit Red Wings interactive programs and the giant QR codes in Times Square come to mind. Each of these serves as prime examples of how QR codes could be on the verge of their breakout moment.

Patriotic Quotations in Binary
Just in time for the Glorious Fourth, we bring you inspiring, patriotic quotations from America’s founders — in binary! In a sense, Thomas Jefferson could be called our country’s technical writer; James Madison, its system architect. And Eleanor Roosevelt was a social media strategist if there ever was one, although her time in the White House predated social media by a good fifty years or so. This novelty is brought to you by Code for America (CfA), a groovy open-source civic betterment project we found out about earlier this year . The quotations are available as PDFs — perfect for the patriotic nerds and nerdy patriots who might want to print these out and post them around IT as we approach the national holiday. As CfA staff member Abhi Nemani wrote on the company blog, “For centuries, [Gov 1.0 leaders] have helped define the very principles we want our fellows to realize through Gov 2.0: democracy, participation and patriotism.” If you’d like to translate the “binary art” messages from Code for America, we found this binary-to-text and text-to-binary conversion tool works nicely.

SCVNGR Puts the Game Back in Location-Based Gaming
Today, SCVNGR (scavenger), a location-centric social game that initially gained traction in the enterprise and at universities, is coming to the public by way of mobile apps for iPhone and Android. Backed by Google Ventures and Highland Capital, SCVNGR is already being used by the U.S. Navy, MIT, Princeton, Harvard and the City of Boston and now its coming everywhere (well, everywhere in the U.S.). Geolocation applications and services are nothing new — Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt and BrightKite are just some of the players in the space. So what makes SCVNGR different
$400 Red Sox Beats Headphones Cost Nearly as Much as a Trip to Fenway [Beats]
Dr. Dre and the Boston Red Sox have combined forces to produce a branded Red Sox version of those notoriously expensive Beats headphones, just in time for Opening Day. The result of this union, predictably, is also expensive. More
