How Much do Music Artists Earn Online? [INFOGRAPHIC]
For years, we’ve heard the music industry talk about declining sales and profits (often unconvincingly tying these numbers to piracy ), but what about the artists? How much do they earn when their music is distributed online, compared to selling CDs? It’s a very hard question to answer, because some of this data is kept secret, and it varies from country to country. Still, David McCandless , author of the book “Information Is Beautiful,” rolled up his sleeves, researched the available data and created this beautiful infographic that shows how hard life is these days for most music artists (unless they’re Lady Gaga ).

Spotify’s U.S. Launch Date Remains Uncertain
Many were hopeful that Spotify CEO Daniel Ek might reveal details about the U.S. launch of the popular European music-streaming service at today’s SXSW Interactive keynote. Shazam and Last.fm Team Up for More Music Magic on iPhone
One of the first big “wow” apps for the iPhone was Shazam — hold up your phone to the radio or TV and BAM, find out what song is playing. Likewise, the Last.fm iPhone app was one of the first apps in the App Store for music fans. Today Shazam and Last.fm are partnering to bring features from both services together. When Shazam launched its premium versions, Shazam Encore and (SHAZAM)RED , last fall, it was unclear if the new features would be worth the $4.99 price tag

Hulu Begins Flirting with Music Videos
As a joint venture between Disney, Fox and NBC Universal, Hulu is best known for its free and extensive library of TV shows and movies. According the the New York Times , the streaming site is about to enter a new area: music videos. The company has announced a limited deal with EMI to provide users with a Hulu channel specifically for EMI artist Norah Jones . Al of Jones’ videos will be on the site, as well as footage from four concerts and several interviews. Jones’ fourth album “The Fall” hit stores earlier this week.
