Apple Store is Down, New Macs on the Way?

The Apple store is currently down , and you know what that means: it may be time to part with some of your hard-earned cash and say hello to a new sleek gadget from Steve Jobs’ workshop. Yesterday, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber predicted that Apple will soon release new Mac Pros, speedier iMacs and a new 27-inch Cinema Display, and hinted at a possibility that Apple might also launch a mysterious “desktop multitouch trackpad device.” It might be an exciting day for Apple product fans. View From the Line: The iPhone 4 Is Bigger Than Elvis

The iPhone 4 is finally in stores and the lines are truly massive . With pre-orders of more than 600,000 units , the crowds showed up early and were prepared to wait in long lines. I know, because I was one of those customers. I waited more than seven hours for my iPhone 4, after arriving just before 6 a.m. at my local Apple Store — and keep in mind, this was an Apple Store inside a mall.

Apple, AT&T apologize for massive iPhone 4 preorder meltdown

Both AT&T and Apple have sent out statements Wednesday acknowledging yesterday's iPhone 4 preorder meltdown . According to AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom, preorder sales for the iPhone 4 were 10 times higher than the first day of preorders for the iPhone 3GS last summer. Apple has also publicly acknowledged that things did not go smoothly, apologizing to would-be customers who weren't able to get an order in before the iPhone 4 sold out. Apple said that it and its cell carriers worldwide took more than 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4 yesterday. This was the "largest number of preorders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions," forcing many customers to abandon their attempts to complete an order.

iPhone 4 is unlocked in Canada, too

Americans: gaze upon your neighbors around you if you want to see what a healthy GSM ecosystem looks like. Okay, we're sure many of our Canadian friends would disagree that the Rogers / Bell / Telus oligopoly is anything close to "healthy," but nonetheless, we're still envious of the fully-unlocked option Apple is offering for all iPhones in the online store -- just like the UK -- along with a promise that a "reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier" if you're still interested in getting tied up in a contract. That's a lot closer to the European phone sales model, and it's a model American carriers have never even come close to touching. Now if you'll excuse us, we need to get back to refreshing our connection to this utterly dead upgrade eligibility server. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] iPhone 4 is unlocked in Canada, too originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 18:41:00 EDT.

This is one of those things that makes you wonder why it hadn't been done already.
