Google Maps Test Ads in Australia

In a move that might be a preview for the rest of the world, Google has implemented sponsored icons on Google Maps in Australia . These icons — which represent establishments like Bankwest and JB Hi-Fi — feature company logos rather than generic establishment icons. This program, which is being launched in Australia for testing, differs from Google’s traditional ad system. As the Sydney Morning Herald points out , these ads (or logos, really) are not purchased AdWords-style, but instead rely on number of impressions.

New MacBook Pro, Air and Mac Pro pricing potentially leaked by Apple ads

Could this be another example of online advertising presaging the onset of a hardware upgrade from Cupertino? Apple's ads on Australian tech pub PC Authority have been spotted displaying some rather peculiar price tags for its flagship mobile and desktop computers. Whereas Cupertino's Aussie online store lists the most affordable versions of the MacBook Pro , MacBook Air and Mac Pro at A$1,599, A$1,999 and A$3,599, respectively, the above, official-looking ads would seem to disagree.

The Commodore name licensed again for a line of keyboard PCs

We've always had a soft spot for Commodore computers. Compact, economical, and robust for their day, they were ubiquitous throughout the 1980s. Unfortunately, the machine's glory days are long behind it, with little more than some gaming rigs and the tireless work of Ben Heck to keep the flag flying. But all that could change if Barry Altman has his way.

Twitter Expected To Take The Wraps Off Its Advertising Platform Today

Later today, Twitter CEO Evan Williams will be interviewed by Umair Haque of the Havas Media Lab at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. We’ll of course be covering any announcements that will be made by Williams on stage, but we expect that at least part of the keynote address will be centered around the company’s advertising platform . Twitter made a memorable splash at SXSW three years ago, and will likely have opted for the conference as the right place to detail its digital advertising plans, which it hopes will become a major source of revenue in addition to its realtime search outsourcing deals with major Internet players like Google , Microsoft and Yahoo , which are said to have already turned the company profitable on an operational basis. Just for reference: the company also switched the flip on the geolocation feature for its website in time for SXSW. Nobody knows for sure whether Twitter will effectively be launching its proprietary ad platform today, but there’s a good chance it will, at least to a subset of advertisers.

Pete Cashmore Talks Foursquare, iPad, and Location on Bloomberg [VIDEO]

If you had to pick the one buzzword that’s dominating social media chatter today, it would have to be location . Just over a year ago, Foursquare burst onto the scene at the SXSW conference in Austin, TX. Since then, it’s only grown dramatically . The result has been a battle for domination in the geolocation space. While many still think Foursquare could be the next Twitter , rivals such as Gowalla are giving the mobile startup some heat, and big players such as Facebook and Twitter are launching location features or are about to launch them

StumbleUpon’s New Ad Platform: An Inside Look

Earlier this week, the social discovery tool StumbleUpon revamped its advertising platform . These changes don’t so much change the basics of how StumbleUpon Advertising works, as much as they add additional tools and metrics for advertisers to better track and understand the results of their campaigns. I got to speak with StumbleUpon’s founder and CEO Garrett Camp, as well as Marc Leibowitz, VP of business development and marketing, about the changes and what it means for advertisers who want to better target their content. StumbleUpon’s advertising platform has always worked by integrating sponsored pages into organically liked or stumbled pages

Stihl’s autumn calendar automatically rips through to tomorrow

Unless they're incredibly quiet or potentially explosive , you won't find us waxing poetic (or even prosaic) about leaf blowers. But if a company that produced leaf blowers made a motorized calendar that tore off its own pages? We'd tell you about that in a heartbeat -- even if the wonderfully wasteful contraption turned out to be a viral ad by agency Euro RSCG rather than an actual household organizer, and even if its pages aren't nearly as saucy as Stihl's usual NSFW fare.

HP ropes in Dr. Dre for ‘Lets Do Amazing’ personality makeover

When you think about HP, do you think about printers or maybe IT outsourcing? How about HP smartphones, ever think of them? You do know that HP still sells iPAQs right? That's ok, we have to remind ourselves too, occasionally, and therein lies the problem: most consumers don't have any idea what HP's 300,000 employees are up to..
